Peony Care: Root Planting Guide
Plant the peony roots 3 feet apart to give ample space for fully mature plants.
Prepare the soil with compost, potting soil or a 16-16-16 fertilizer.
One tablespoon of fertilizer per plant.
The most important part of planting is to not plant the peonies too deep! Plant so the new eyes are 1 inch below soil level. It is fine if old stems poke through the ground.
Once planted, give a good watering and you will not have to worry about the peonies until spring when you are able to water again.
During the first summer make sure the new peony plants don’t dry out. Year 2 and beyond they will be more hearty.
Keep weeds down to a minimum to prevent them from shading out the growing peonies.
